in vim, when i hit / to go into search mode, i can use control-u to clear to start of line (but leaves the /)

Yes, when I added it to the todo list, I realized it was the same functionality you had asked for for insert mode. The insert mode version is more difficult, as Intellisense-compatibility is always a minefield (and Word/Outlook are even more difficult), but the command line version won't be too much trouble. I'll try to add it as soon as I can invest some time and get back to you about it.
I've added full support for Ctrl-W and Ctrl-U in ViEmu/VS and /SQL 2.1.8 and ViEmu/W&O 1.0.16, both in insert mode and when typing a search or ex command:
